The Muir Musical was launched in 1991 by a Muir sophomore, Orrin Webber, with a vision for this production to provide an outlet for students interested in musical theatre who were NOT necessarily theatre majors. Before graduating, Orrin directed the Muir Musical’s first three productions: Pippin, Into the Woods, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Except for one single-year hiatus, the Muir Musical has put on a full-scale Broadway musical production every year since its inception. It is the largest and only completely student directed and produced musical theatre event on campus.
Despite originating at Muir College, the production is comprised of 75-80 dedicated undergraduate students representing all six colleges. Past musicals have included Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Pippin, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Little Shop of Horrors, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Once on This Island, Company, Hair, Cabaret, Once Upon A Mattress, Urinetown, Kiss Me, Kate, Seussical! the Musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and RENT. The Muir Musical has been sponsored in the past primarily by Muir student organizations, the Muir Parents Fund, founding Muir College Provost John L. Stewart’s Humanities Fund, Council of Provosts, Muir Dean’s Office, Alumni Association, Triton Fund, and the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs.
